Finding the Fantastic - A Fragrance for Every Season

Dawn Mayo

There's something special about each and every season that we can grasp hold of and remember. Even if we favor one season over another, there's likely something that you'll love about one of the others that will bring fond memories or kindle warm feelings. Likewise, there are fantastic scents for each and every season, spring, summer, fall, and winter, at least one of which can recreate memories of those same wonderful things you love most about the seasons of the year.

In my community, the arrival of spring is a welcome relief after four, and sometimes five months of shoveling driveways and scraping frosty windshields. It’s a welcomed season because the garden goes in and the BBQ comes out. But whether you prefer warmer days or bracing cold, every season offers up a delicious smorgasbord of scents, scented candles and products for the home offer a unique way to experience any season all year round.

Spring

“Is the spring coming?" he said. "What is it like?"...

"It is the sun shining on the rain and the rain falling on the sunshine...”

Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden

Fragrances of sweet rain, morning dew, and fresh, green grass herald the arrival of spring. Important holidays like Memorial Day promise gatherings and celebrations with family and friends. Create the cheerful exuberance of spring in your home any time with scented products specially designed to be both beautiful and evocative.

Rain scents will give your home the clean, new smell of a dawning spring day. And it wouldn’t be Memorial Day without delicious treats like sweet, red strawberries. The Strawberry Shortcake Gourmet Jar Candle will fill your living space with that extra touch of home-baked happiness with its spot-on scent. Or maybe the Berry Patriotic Scented Gourmet Candle, with just a touch of blueberry cobbler is more to your taste? Welcome warmer weather by filling your home with these joyful scents.

Summer

“If it could only be like this always – always summer, always alone, the fruit always ripe and Aloysius in a good temper...”

 Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited

Using fragrances as part of your summer décor is an easy way to transition from spring cleaning and getting the garden planted to more carefree and leisurely days. As you arrange your outdoor furniture, don’t forget to bring the beauty of the season inside with fragrances suited to summer’s relaxed mood. The aromas of summer: ocean, roses, BBQs, popsicles, suntan lotions, are potent and seem to have more staying power than fragrances at other times of the year. It’s as if the heat holds onto the scents, willing them to linger. One of my cherished childhood memories is of a nighttime beach fire with all my family around, and sticky fingers from marshmallows roasted on a branch. Our Toasted Marshmallow Gourmet Jar Candle fills your rooms with that familiar scent of sugar and fire making magic together. And what better way to celebrate the Fourth of July than with Birthday Cake Warmer Fragrance Oil wafting through your home and applauding the birthday of independence!

Autumn

“I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.”

Henry David Thoreau

Thoreau’s frank words evoke the somewhat solitary feelings of autumn. Certainly, as leaves turn and tumble, we experience a sensation of fearful preparation for the cold winter ahead. Days grow shorter, and we lay aside our shorts and t-shirts in favor of booties and windbreakers. Fortunately, there are many comforts to see us through the gradually darkening days. Halloween and Thanksgiving promise hauntings and homecomings, and some of our favorite smells fill the air during this season.

Pumpkin, golden ales and pretzels, burning leaves, fireworks, and so many other fragrances color the autumn landscape. For Halloween, the Candy Corn Scents Gourmet Jar Candle gives your home a yummy and nostalgic boost. The kids will be looking everywhere for those goodies! Try the richly cinnamon and nutmeg-scented, Pumpkin Pie Scented Candle for a welcoming and homey atmosphere. Or experience another fall favorite: the realistic Sweet Cornbread Muffins Country Bakery Candle.  Whichever you preference, the fragrances of the fall season are guaranteed to lift spirits, and invite compliments.

Winter

Brew me a cup for a winter’s night.
For the wind howls loud, and the furies fight;
Spice it with love and stir it with care,
And I’ll toast your bright eyes, my sweetheart fair.

Book of Minna Thomas Antrim, "A Night Cap," A Toasts, 1902

Bundle up, light the fireplace, and draw loved ones near… winter is here! So many happy memories come from winters past. Staying warm by the fireplace as a snowstorm rumbles outside, or running out into freshly fallen snow to build the season’s first snowman, as the landscape outside becomes white, and that special silence descends, make your home a scent-filled haven. Our Warmer Fragrance Oils come in scents of Christmas Past and Mistletoe that will drift throughout your home, enchanting even the sternest Scrooge. For rustic memories of country winters, try Cozy Sweater or Winter Cabin Scented Candles. Winter is a wonderful season for gift giving so don’t forget to select beautifully designed and scented products for those very special hostess gifts needed throughout the holiday season. What will be on your wish list?
